How to Remove a Password From a PDF You Own

Password-protected PDFs are useful for secure sharing, but inconvenient when you need to edit, print, or send the document to someone without the original password workflow. If you own the document and know its password, removing the protection takes about 30 seconds.

What "unlocking" a PDF means

A PDF password can restrict two different things:

Opening password (user password): The file can't be opened at all without this password. This is the most common type of protection.
Permissions password (owner password): The file opens freely but certain actions — printing, copying text, editing — are blocked. This password is used by the creator to lock down what recipients can do with the document.

If you've lost the password to a PDF you created yourself, there is no simple recovery option. PDF encryption is designed to be strong enough that there's no practical "forgot password" mechanism. Your options are limited:

Check your password manager — if you set the password recently, it may be stored there
Check if you have an older, unprotected version of the document
Contact the person who sent it to you and ask them to resend it unprotected or with the password
