How to Split a PDF and Extract Specific Pages
PDFs are great for packaging content into a single file, but sometimes you need to go the other direction — pull out a single page, extract a range, or separate a merged document back into its parts. Here is how to split a PDF without any software, completely free.
Why split a PDF?
The most common reason is to extract a single page from a large document. You received a 50-page contract bundle and need to forward just the signature page. You have a 30-page report and need to extract the executive summary (pages 1–3) to send separately. You scanned a stack of invoices into one PDF and now need each invoice as its own file for accounting.
Other common scenarios include:
- Sending a subset of pages to a specific team or client while keeping the rest confidential
- Separating a multi-chapter document to distribute individual chapters to students
- Extracting a page with a diagram or table to embed in a presentation
- Breaking a very large PDF into smaller parts for email attachment size limits
How to split a PDF using PDF Ninjas
- Go to the Split PDF tool.
- Upload your PDF.
- Enter your email address and click Process.
- Download the ZIP file. Inside, each page is a separate numbered PDF: page-001.pdf, page-002.pdf, and so on.
- Open the ZIP file and extract only the page or pages you need.
How to extract a range of pages
PDF Ninjas splits a PDF into every individual page. To extract a range (say, pages 5 to 10), follow this workflow:
- Split the full PDF to get all pages as individual files.
- Select the numbered page files you want (page-005.pdf through page-010.pdf).
- Go to the Merge PDF tool and upload those specific page files.
- Merge them into a single new PDF. The result is your extracted page range.
This two-step process gives you complete control over any combination of pages from the original document.
Opening and extracting ZIP files
PDF Ninjas delivers split pages in a ZIP archive. Here is how to open it:
- Windows: Right-click the ZIP file and choose "Extract All", or double-click to browse files inside without extracting.
- Mac: Double-click the ZIP file to automatically extract its contents.
- iPhone/Android: Use the Files app (iOS) or a file manager app (Android) that supports ZIP preview.
Can I split a password-protected PDF?
No — to split a protected PDF, you must first remove the password using the Unlock PDF tool. Once the password is removed, you can split the PDF normally. This requires you to know the correct password.
