Why PDFs end up with the wrong orientation
The most common cause is scanning a document while it is positioned sideways or upside down in the feeder tray. Another frequent cause is saving a presentation or spreadsheet as a PDF where some pages were set to landscape and others to portrait — when merged together the mixed orientations create a confusing document. Mobile phone camera scans (using apps like Adobe Scan or Microsoft Lens) can also end up rotated if the phone was held at the wrong angle when the photo was taken.
Choosing the right rotation angle
If your document appears sideways with text running from bottom to top, choose 90° clockwise to correct it. If the text runs from top to bottom (the other sideways direction), choose 270° (which is equivalent to 90° counter-clockwise). If your document is completely upside down, choose 180°. When in doubt, open the PDF on your screen first to visually identify which direction it needs to turn before uploading.
Rotating individual pages vs. the whole document
PDF Ninjas currently applies the same rotation to every page in the document. If you have a document where only some pages need rotating — for example a mostly portrait report with a few landscape data tables — the recommended workflow is: split the PDF into individual pages, rotate each group separately, then merge the pages back together in the original order.
